Our History

Honouring Our Journey

From the outset, Dr. Mohammed Baobaid had the vision to provide the Muslim community with resources to strengthen and support their families in times of conflict. This was the essence behind the establishment of the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration (MRCSSI).

It was in 2002, when Dr. Baobaid’s research identified gaps and barriers to accessing support services by Muslim families impacted by domestic violence. As a result of this research, a constructive conversation and dialogue began between leaders in the London Muslim community and mainstream anti-violence and social service providers for the first time. This dialogue was facilitated in collaboration with Changing Ways and the London Coordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse.

In February 2004 the Muslim Family Safety Project (MFSP) was launched at the London Muslim Mosque as a collaborative project between the London Muslim community and anti-violence agencies that was coordinated through Changing Ways.

The main goals of MFSP were to raise awareness within the Muslim community on domestic violence, and at the same time, help service providers meet the needs of Muslim families impacted by domestic violence by promoting collaboration, dialogue, and understanding. In 2005, MFSP became the Muslim Family Support Service (MFSS). The purpose was to assist Muslim individuals and families during personal and interpersonal difficulties by acting as a referral service and an intermediary between partner organizations. This resulted in an increase in the number of Muslim families requesting assistance from culturally meaningful services.

In 2009, Dr. Baobaid established the MRCSSI with the support of a group of Muslim professionals and business people and other passionate individuals from mainstream sectors that believed in the vision in its very early stages. At the core of our service is the need to develop more culturally meaningful responses to domestic violence.
