THE MUSLIMAH'S COLLECTIVE OF LONDON

About Us

WHAT DO WE DO?

MCL seeks to create a safer space for young Muslim women to build our capacities and to organize within our communities in the pursuit of social justice.

In our work, we seek to:

  • Recognize and address the unique intersections of Islamophobia, racism, and misogyny that operate in the London Muslim community and in the broader London community
  • Provide a platform for young Muslim women to collectively share our experiences and to collaboratively define solutions
  • Develop opportunities for young Muslim women to become engaged in our communities through sharing resources and through encouraging mentorship
  • Foster connections with allies and community partners to communicate our needs and to implement solutions

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

MCL was initiated through the collaborative efforts of Muslimahs, City Councillor Mohamed Mo Salih and community members in London, Ontario. It came out of the recognition that the voices of Muslimahs have been and continue to be excluded from major decision making tables in the London Muslim community and in the broader London community.

MCL was born when recognition became accompanied by action. We not only wanted to understand the ways in which we experienced marginalization in London and beyond, but we also wanted to change this reality for us and for the Muslimahs around us. This desire for action inspired us to form a team of dedicated Muslimahs and submit a grant application to the Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) in the summer of 2017.

MCL received a grant from the YOF for a one-year period from May 2018 to May 2019.

Our Work

Who are Muslimahs?

Muslimahs are Muslim women.

Why do we run workshops for Muslimahs?

Our motivation is simple: We are Muslimahs, so we do this work for ourselves and for the Muslimahs around us.

We believe that our voices, experiences, and needs have been marginalized for too long. In an effort to change this reality, we want to create safe(r) spaces for us to talk about the things that matter to us.

Our workshops are spaces for us to share our experiences with and knowledge on racism, misogyny, Islamophobia and more. They are places where we equip ourselves with the skills and tools needed to mobilize for social justice. They are sanctuaries within which we foster sisterhood, mentorship, solidarity, and healing with our fellow Muslimahs.

Why are we sharing our workshop content online?

We want our workshop content to be used as a resource for those engaging in similar work or those looking to learn more.

We share our workshop content in two different ways:

  • Infographics outline broad information on workshop agendas, goals and logistics.
  • Content documents provide specific information on workshop structures, activities and resources.

We have intentionally included minimal instruction and direction in our content documents. We made this choice for a few reasons. Primarily, we want to allow maximum room for you to interpret, modify and execute workshop activities as you see fit. We also want to challenge you to shift your attention toward the needs of participants over the completion of workshop activities. While you explore our content documents, we encourage you to consider the value of this approach in your own work.

If you have any questions about our infographics or content documents, you can reach out to muslimahscollectiveoflondon@gmail.com.
