POSTING Managing Director

DATE September 16, 2022

Since 2009, the Muslim Resource Centre for Social Support and Integration (MRCSSI), a not-for-profit agency situated in London, Ontario, has provided unique and specialized supports for individuals and families from collectivist backgrounds. These include newcomers and immigrants who require assistance to overcome challenges, manage conflict and ensure their family’s safety and wellbeing, through person-directed approaches that offer culturally appropriate services.

MRCSSI is currently recruiting a Managing Director. Working with a dedicated team of professionals the incumbent will act as a compassionate and collaborative leader who will strive to lead progressive activity, delivering services in keeping with the Agency’s vision and mission.

Role of the Managing Director at MRCCSI

The Managing Director plays the key management role of the Agency, implementing the Agency’s strategic planning priorities in all its activities, ensuring effective day-to-day operations. This entails directing the delivery of all programs, while overseeing the tracking and reporting of the metrics for each one. Building good relationships internally within the organization while engaging with diverse communities externally is key to maintaining the success of the organization.

Reporting Relationship

The Managing Director works in collaboration with the Executive Director of the Agency and reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Key Accountabilities

The Managing Director is responsible for the Agency’s activities in the following key areas.

  • Overseeing Programs and Services. These must be delivered effectively within the Organization’s Vision and Mission to meet the needs of clients and communities, requiring the implementation, tracking and reporting in keeping with the strategic priorities of the organization.
  • Overseeing fund development, always adhering to the Vision and Mission of the Agency as well as its policies and procedures. These also govern this person’s communication, at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Supporting outreach to target communities, potential partner organizations and donors, as well as being responsible for managing and coordinating volunteer resources. This role requires a comprehensive and collaborative working relationship with the Executive Director of the Agency, the Managers and Staff and the Board of Directors.
  • Overseeing and supporting employees. The Managing Director is responsible for ensuring the wellbeing of Staff and Managers, while insisting on compliance with the policies and procedures of the organization. This entails conducting regular meetings to identify challenges and successes, making sure that the lines of communication remain open. Conducting performance appraisals and facilitating professional development where appropriate is important, as is overseeing remuneration of employees in compliance with the Agency’s Vision and Mission.
  • Exercising leadership in the succession planning for employees of MRCSSI.
  • Overseeing the evolving relationship between MRCSSI and CCIR (the Centre for Culturally Integrated Research), and facilitating CCIR’s work to enhance and improve the programmes and services of MRCSSI. It is important to sustain the co-operative relationship between the two entities, where the direct services of MRCSSI inform the research of CCIR and vice versa.
  • Other related activities as necessary and/or assigned by the Board of Directors.

Financial Management

The Managing Director is responsible for the financial management of MRCSSI. This includes the monitoring and reporting of funds and expenditures in compliance with the Agency’s goals established by the Board of Directors. Working with the bookkeeper the Managing Director will compile a monthly review of expenditures and revenues. This is key to monitoring an operational budget that includes grants and donations, and a report must be presented to the monthly meeting of the Board of Directors. (The application of management tools and methods is essential for this monitoring.) Annual financial planning requires leadership by the Managing Director in setting and overseeing the annual budget, and the annual financial report will be presented to the auditors prior to the AGM of the MRCSSI.

Grant Applications and Reporting

It is the responsibility of the Managing Director to ensure that the Agency seeks grant opportunities that can meet the needs of the diverse communities it serves. This may entail approving partnerships and collaborations with other community organizations seeking grants. Approving grant applications, monitoring the metrics for each one and approving the final reports that will be submitted to funders is also the responsibility of the Managing Director.

Fund Development Initiatives

This position entails the oversight of annual fund development strategies and fundraising events, in consultation with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. The Managing Director will ensure that funds are used appropriately, monitoring evolving service trends, client/community profiles and the needs of diverse communities, working collaboratively with other service providers. Building and sustaining relationships with individual and corporate donors is key for fund development, and the Managing Director will oversee annual events that recognize donors and serve as outreach opportunities for future fund development. Key in this planning is the goal of obtaining stable long-term funding for the MRCSSI.

Required Expertise and Capabilities

The Managing Director must have management experience, preferably including work in the non-profit sector. Post-secondary training in business administration would be an asset but is not a requirement.  Familiarity with social media platforms is important. A proven track record in strategic development, program implementation, personnel and financial management is essential. Ideally, the candidate will be familiar with trauma-informed practice and the work being done in the anti-violence sector. (Training in these areas is available.) Knowledge of local social support services is important. Familiarity with the values and principles of collectivist societies, including groups from Muslim backgrounds, is highly recommended.
